Social media outlet Reddit filed a lawsuit against humanity, an artificial intelligence company on Wednesday, accusing millions of user comments of illegally rubbing them and training the Claude chatbot without permission or compensation.
The California court case represents the latest front in the growth of the battle between content providers and AI companies regarding data use, training increasingly sophisticated language models that drive the generative AI revolution.
Valued at $61.5 billion, humanity heavily supported by Amazon was founded in 2021 by a former executive of Openai, creator of ChatGpt.
Known for its Claude Chatbot and AI models, the company positions it as focusing on AI safety and responsible development.
“This case concerns two faces of humanity. The public faces that try to infiltrate consumer consciousness with claims of justice and respect for the boundaries and law, and the private faces that ignore rules that prevent them from attempting to further line up their pockets are lawsuits.
According to the complaint, humanity has been training models on Reddit content since at least December 2021, and CEO Dario Amodei has co-authored a research paper that specifically identifies high-quality content for data training.
The lawsuit alleges that humanity blocked bots from accessing Reddit, but its automated systems continued to harvest Reddit servers more than 100,000 times in the next few months.
Reddit seeks financial damages and a court injunction, enforcing humanity to comply with the terms of the user contract. The company requested a ju trial.
In an email to AFP, humanity said, “We will oppose Reddit's claims and will vehemently defend ourselves.”
Reddit has signed license agreements with other AI giants, including Google and Openai. This allows these companies to use Reddit content on terms that protect users' privacy and provide rewards to the platform.
These transactions have helped raise Reddit's stock price since it was published in 2024.
Reddit's shares closed more than 6% on Wednesday following the news of the lawsuit.
Musicians, authors, visual artists and news publications sued a variety of AI companies that used data without permission or payment.
AI companies generally defend their practices by asserting fair use, claiming that training AI on large datasets fundamentally changes the original content and is necessary for innovation.
Most of these lawsuits are still in their early stages, but their results could have a major impact on the shape of the AI industry.
