As part of the Galaxy Unpacked 2026 event, Samsung announced the Galaxy Z Flip 8, one of three new foldable phones alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra. The new device retains most of the design of its predecessor (including the camera, unfortunately), but is slimmer and now has more activity on the cover display.
The Galaxy Z Flip 8 is the smallest, and some might argue, the most fun of all Samsung’s foldable devices. Weighing just 180 grams, it folds to 85.7 x 75.4 x 13.1 mm (3.37 x 2.97 x 0.51 inches), making it very pocketable. When unfolded, it has the size of a regular smartphone at 166.9 x 75.4 x 6.1 mm (6.57 x 2.97 x 0.24 inches). It’s now slightly lighter, smaller, and slimmer than the previous model.
The main screen is a 6.9-inch AMOLED 2X (1,080 x 2,520) display with 120Hz adaptive refresh rate and Vision Booster. The cover, or what Samsung also calls the Flex Window, is a 4.1-inch 948 x 1,048 AMOLED screen with a 60/120Hz refresh rate. These display sizes and resolutions are the same as the Galaxy Z Flip 7.
The new Flex window includes most of the new features. It offers “apps, insights, and actions” directly on the cover screen, as well as a feature called Now Brief that provides “next steps and timely insights” to provide information at a glance. Automations powered by Gemini Intelligence will also be easily accessible from the Flex Window, “enabling users to complete connected actions through sidekey activations or natural voice requests.”
Engadget’s review didn’t like the Galaxy Z Flip 7’s outdated cameras, and unfortunately Samsung hasn’t changed them. The 50MP f/1.8 main (wide) camera, 12MP ultrawide, and 10MP selfie camera are still available. Of course, you can also use features such as the cover display to take selfies with the main camera, and the “camcorder grip” mode that allows you to hold the bottom of the device and take photos in a horizontal position. A new horizontal lock option has been added to stabilize the horizon for video shooting up to 4K 60 fps. This is a feature found in action cameras like the GoPro Hero 13.
Like other foldable models, the Z Flip 8 is equipped with Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy processor, which improves performance and battery life. However, the battery itself remains unchanged from last year’s 4,300mAh dual battery, and the charging speed remains the same with up to 25W wired charging rate and 15W wireless charging rate.
Despite the minor refresh, the Galaxy Z Flip 8 costs $100 more than before, with a starting price of $1,200. It’s currently available for pre-order at Samsung, Best Buy, Amazon, and other retailers, and will begin shipping on August 7th.
