Tesla has begun deploying Grok, an in-vehicle conversational AI assistant developed by Xai, to eligible vehicles from July 12th. This feature illustrates the most direct integration to date between Elon Musk's artificial intelligence startup and Tesla's consumer product lineup.
Grok is pre-installed on new vehicles
According to Tesla's FAQ page for this feature, all new vehicles delivered after July 12, 2025 will include the Grok AI. Older vehicle owners can access it through over the air update if the vehicle meets some hardware and software requirements.
Specifically, GROK is currently only supported on Tesla models equipped with AMD infotainment processors and Tesla models running vehicle software version 2025.26 or later. Compatible models include Model S, Model 3, Model X, Model Y, and CyberTrack. A premium connection subscription or an active Wi-Fi connection is also required.
Tesla points out that additional vehicle compatibility could arrive in future software updates.
Grok features and limitations for now
The driver can interact with GROK using the app launcher or by pressing and holding the voice command button on the steering wheel. Grok is designed to answer questions and have conversations using natural language, providing answers tailored to the personality of your choice.
For fun, Tesla posted a demo of Groke that could be running “hinged” with “unhinged” and was greatly helped by the shock of the official humanoid robot social media accounts about what they would do to Optimus when they were on that date.
However, it should be noted that, at least for now, Grok cannot currently issue commands to the vehicle itself. Traditional voice commands for tasks such as climate control, navigation, and media remain separate from GROK at the time of writing.
This feature is released in beta and does not require a GROK account or XAI subscription to activate it, but its policies may change over time.
Grok Privacy and In-Car Experience
Tesla emphasizes that interactions with Grok are handled safely by Xai and are not linked to the user's Tesla account or vehicle. The conversation remains anonymous unless the user signs GROK separately to sync history across devices.
Tesla also began direct advertising for Grok on its official vehicle webpage, showing its functionality as part of its in-car experience, further highlighting its focus on AI and infotainment features of all electric vehicles.
