Imagine a LEGO creation that not only moves, but can also see, hear and talk.
That's exactly what Creative Mindstorms has done with Dave, the world's most advanced artificially intelligent LEGO robot head.
The robot head, which took several months to build, demonstrates the incredible possibilities that can be achieved by combining LEGO bricks with cutting-edge AI technology.

Dave's AI Brain
What really sets Dave apart is our integration with ChatGPT, which allows Dave to engage in natural, fluid conversations and make interactions feel incredibly realistic. You can even play games like rock-paper-scissors and respond in real time, creating a seamless conversational experience.

In addition to his incredible abilities, Dave is also bilingual, able to communicate fluently in English and Dutch, making him the world's first bilingual LEGO robot head. This capability demonstrates the potential for AI-enabled LEGO creations to transcend language barriers and enhance global communication.

What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?
The creative process
Building Dave was no easy task. His builders spent weeks designing intricate mechanisms, including a compact system for moving his eyes in multiple directions. The mouth mechanism alone took two weeks to complete and required more gears than an entire head.

Dave's Work Style
Dave's lifelike movements are achieved through a complex system of motors and gears. Dave's eyes can move up, down and side to side, and his eyebrows and corners of his mouth are also articulated to convey different emotions. Perhaps the most complex part of the machine, the eyes are connected to each other by a horizontal shaft with a vertical axis on each end. The eyes can be moved up and down by a large motor, and can be moved side to side with a rack and pinion setup.
Dave's jaw is a simple hinge that is pushed and pulled by a motor, and the corners of his mouth are controlled by lift arms that can rotate up and down. But Dave is more than just hardware: Powered by around 1,100 lines of code, Dave can track hands and faces, recognize faces and objects, read text, count, infer emotions, age and gender, tell the time and weather.

Challenges and Solutions
One of the biggest challenges was creating Dave's hair. After struggling with LEGO bricks, the creators opted for a more practical solution: a wig. This creative workaround required some tweaking to the shape of his head, but was ultimately successful.
