In recent statements on artificial intelligence, Spotify has highlighted a turning point within the company where some of its top engineers will be replaced by AI. “Several Spotify engineers haven’t written a single line of code since December,” co-CEO Gustav Söderström said during the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call, highlighting the company’s integration of AI coding tools into its workflow.
According to a recent report, in 2025, Spotify introduced more than 50 new features and updates to its streaming app. Meanwhile, the new year started with some interesting AI-integrated releases, including AI-powered prompt playlists, audiobook page matches, and About This Song.
A new shift in technology this year came after the launch of “Honk,” a new AI system that uses generative AI, specifically Anthropic’s Claude Code, to accelerate coding and deployment. Söderström described how engineers can send instructions to Claude via Slack to fix bugs or add features while they’re commuting. The AI completes the task and pushes back an updated version of your app for review before publishing.
Spotify says the system has significantly increased development speed and believes this is just the beginning of AI-driven software engineering.
In particular, Söderström pointed out that music tastes are subjective and vary by region and taste, making them more difficult to commercialize than the factual datasets used in large-scale language models.
Analysts similarly asked the company about AI-generated content, and the company said metadata could be used to identify the type of creation, but the company continues to monitor its website for spam and abuse.
