Applying for a job can be stressful and if you feel overwhelmed by writing a cover letter, it can be fascinating to turn to generative artificial intelligence (GAI) tools such as ChatGpt.

However, according to recruiters and hiring experts, AI can help you stand out for all the wrong reasons.

Here are some common pitfalls and ways to avoid them:

How common is the use of generator AI by job seekers?

Dr. Thunder also warns that if you rely heavily on it, “You'll sound like someone else.”

“Yes, it saves time, yes, it can experience you and help you, but you should not rely entirely on AI to write things for you in terms of applying for a job, as you miss the unique voice you have,” she says.

“I use it to get ideas and stuff like that, but in reality, you have to think about it yourself.”

Put your personality in your cover letter

Staden says the cover letter is the first impression of a candidate for recruiters or employment managers, an opportunity to give you insight into your personality and explain why you are the right fit for the organization.

“If you're looking at the personal touches and anecdotes related to the industry we work in, I'm going to prefer candidates that are more than the cover letters that the candidate has a common and AI-written,” she says.

Sally Tredinnick, the Gold Coast-based national recruitment manager for the same agency, agrees that “it's important to inject something about who you are as a person,” and says that it's important.

“The CV is a user manual, the cover letter is a flashy advert and you want to see the user manual,” says Tredinnick.

Looking “too perfect” can result in a red flag

Tredinnick says it could become clear that applicants will use GAI to optimize their CVs to make themselves look like the perfect match.

Use it as an editor, not a ghostwriter

When using GAI to assist with applications, Staden recommends using it “as an editor, not a ghostwriter.”

Tredinnick says that using GAI, you can write a cover letter that stands out from the pack by giving the right prompt and editing the response.

She says this involves taking a more nuanced approach than simply saying, “Hey, this is a job description and writing a cover letter.”

“If possible, consider what you're interested in the company, what you're interested in the role, what three outcomes related to the role, and one of the interesting information about yourself, and put it in ChatGpt.
