Meta’s Metaverse product, which CEO Mark Zuckerberg has changed its name to emphasize, has spent tens of billions of dollars developing a product used by a relatively small number of people, a huge waste of time and money.
Zuckerberg detailed how he expects AI agents to write the majority of the code for the meta within the next 12 to 18 months. The company also recently decided that job applicants will be allowed to use AI as part of a coding test during interviews. But Mr. Shah’s message highlights fears that workers have long harbored. That means not only do bosses expect to replace workers with AI, but they also expect those who continue to use AI to become much more efficient. At the moment, most of the tech giants are pushing the adoption of AI into their workforce. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy told employees in July that he expected AI to completely change the way the company works, leading to job losses. “We expect companies to reduce their total workforce over the next few years as the widespread use of AI across the company improves efficiency,” he said.
Many experienced software engineers feel that AI coding agents are creating a new crisis. “With rapid growth in the use of engineering and a relentless focus on learning from the time and results gained, we expect 80% of Metaverse employees to incorporate AI into their daily work by the end of this year,” Shah said in a message. He went on to mention a series of upcoming trainings and internal documents on AI coding, including two Metaverse AI Learning Day events.
“Spend the time. Take your training seriously. Share what you learn and don’t be afraid to experiment,” he added. “The harder we work, the more we unlock.
