A Carrizo Springs man was arrested after authorities say he was in possession of hundreds of AI-generated pornographic images and videos depicting children in South Texas.
Adan Covarrubias, 31, was booked into the Dimmit County Jail on May 19 on suspicion of possession of computer-generated child pornography, a first-degree felony, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
FBI agents in Del Rio obtained consent in April to search and seize electronic devices from Covarrubias’ home in Carizo Springs as part of a months-long investigation into AI-generated child pornography, DPS said.
Investigators said they found more than 900 images and videos allegedly created by Covarrubias depicting AI-generated pornographic content involving prepubescent and adolescent children.
While searching for digital evidence, investigators also discovered child sexual abuse material that was not generated by AI, DPS said.
Authorities said Covarrubias downloaded photos from an open source page affiliated with a South Texas school and manipulated them with AI tools to create nude images of children.
Investigators have identified about 30 child victims so far, DPS said.
The charges were filed under Senate Bill 20, a Texas law that criminalizes the possession or promotion of obscene visual material that appears to depict children, including images generated or modified using artificial intelligence or other computer software.
DPS said the FBI is coordinating victim services for those affected by the incident. The Maverick County District Attorney’s Office is also assisting with the ongoing investigation, DPS said.
