Ghent University spin-off listed among the world’s most sustainable AI applications

Applications of AI

A Ghent University spin-off has been named among the world’s top 100 artificial intelligence applications contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

This certification is carried out by the International Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (IRCAI), which is part of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Belgian company Nobl.ai has been featured in IRCAI’s annual list of leading AI initiatives aligned with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Nobl.ai became completely independent from Ghent University in February 2024. The company was founded by AI professor Tijl De Bie (CSO) and computer scientists Alexandru Cristian Mara (CEO) and Bo Kang (CTO).

The startup develops AI tools for the labor market. The company’s software automates job matching, extracts structured data from job postings and resumes, and uses artificial intelligence to provide career guidance. “This technology is currently being used in a labor market platform serving more than one million job seekers,” the Ghent-based company said.

IRCAI describes Nobl.ai as “promising” with respect to the five Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those focused on tackling poverty and reducing inequalities, including gender inequality.

“The system is built with trust and accountability as core values. It includes strategies to detect and mitigate bias and ensure equal opportunities for all,” IRCAI said.
