Digest of today's news: Draft UK AI regulations. OpenAI opens Tokyo office.Adobe is working on generative video AI
Following the example of the EU earlier this year, the UK has begun drafting regulations for the most powerful AI models. Policymakers at the Department of Science, Innovation and Technology have begun the process of developing legislation aimed at limiting the potential harm caused by AI. There are no pending bills yet. According to reports, the government is likely to wait until the French-hosted AI conference later this year or early next year to begin consultations on the topic. Meanwhile, officials from the Department for Technology and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport have proposed changes to UK copyright law to ensure that companies and individuals are not allowed to use content based on language models.
OpenAI has opened a new office in Tokyo with the aim of further global expansion. This Japan office will be the company's first in the Asia-Pacific region. The AI leader said the Tokyo office will bring it closer to enterprise customers, including Toyota and Rakuten, which use its products to automate complex business processes. Tadao Nagasaki, former president of Amazon Web Services Japan, has been appointed as OpenAI's new president of Japan. A new Japanese version of ChatGPT was also announced on Monday.
More on the AI space: Adobe is working on its own generative video model. This tool creates footage from scratch, guided by text prompts or reference images. Users will also have access to her three new features: Add Object, Delete Object, and Generative Augmentation. This model forms part of the company's expanding Firefly family of generative AI products. Adobe reports that the video editing suite will be available through Premiere Pro later this year.
