In February, Microsoft invested $16 million in Mistral.
(Reuters) – French tech startup Mistral AI is in talks with investors about raising hundreds of millions of dollars at a valuation of $5 billion, The Information reported on Tuesday.
The report, citing people with direct knowledge of the matter, said it was unclear which investors Mr. Mistral had discussed the new funding round with.
Mistral's existing investors include Andreessen Horowitz, Lightspeed Ventures, and Microsoft, which also backs AI startup OpenAI.
In February, Microsoft invested $16 million in Mistral and partnered with the company to make its artificial intelligence models available through its Azure cloud computing platform.
The partnership has drawn intense scrutiny from the European Union, with lawmakers demanding an investigation into what they see as a concentration of power by the tech giants.
The startup only recently started turning a profit, raising $415 million in December, the report added. Mistral was valued at €2 billion in its last funding round in December.
