Chinese authorities call for expanded AI applications in the health sector

Applications of AI

BEIJING — China’s National Health Commission and four other authorities are calling for the broader application of artificial intelligence (AI) in the country’s medical field in the coming years, according to a document released by all five authorities and made public on Tuesday.

According to the goals set in the document, by 2030, intelligent diagnosis and treatment support will be fundamentally ubiquitous throughout China’s primary-level medical institutions, including community and village clinics.

On the other hand, AI technologies such as intelligent medical image diagnosis and clinical decision support technology will be widely introduced in hospitals at Tier 2 and above in China’s three-tier hospital system.

The document also proposes expanding the use of AI in patient services to enable hospitals to provide integrated and intelligent services throughout the care process, including accurate appointment scheduling, triage, pre-diagnosis and follow-up services.

The document also said China plans to upgrade its intelligent epidemiological surveillance system to accurately support infectious disease prevention and control decision-making in real time.
