BEIJING: China has launched a month-long campaign to crack down on videos altered by artificial intelligence (AI) that “distort, parody or vulgarize” classic Chinese films, TV dramas and animation works.
The special campaign, which began on Thursday (January 1), was launched by the National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA), a provincial-level agency that oversees many of China's major television and radio entities, including state broadcaster CCTV.
In a statement shared on WeChat on Dec. 31, NRTA said parody clips that “exploit and distort Chinese culture” will be removed.
Targets include AI-generated videos based on popular Chinese works such as Journey to the West and Romance of the Three Kingdoms, as well as depictions of “exemplary Chinese heroes and figures.”
Clips that contain violent, bizarre or indecent content, or that “violate public order” or promote “wrong values” will also be removed, NRTA said.
“With the rapid development of generative AI, some online accounts have misused these tools to make destructive modifications, strange deconstructions, and vulgar adaptations of classic Chinese films, TV dramas, and anime,” the NRTA said, calling such content “bizarre” and “vulgar.”
