Generative AI is beginning to reshape not only business operations but also the way companies think. According to a new analysis of harvard business review. While many executives focus on efficiency and cost reduction, the authors argue that the greater promise of this technology lies in the idea stage, the early stages of innovation where assumptions are questioned and new possibilities emerge.

The HBR article points out that there is a proliferation of companies using large-scale language models for idea generation. A recent study shows that use cases will grow by 12% from 2024 to 2025, making it among the top five most popular applications.

Large-scale language models (LLMs) can quickly generate hundreds of variations on a concept, helping teams iterate deeper. Exposure to vast datasets also allows them to remix insights across industries in ways that humans cannot naturally attempt.

But researchers warn that this boost in creativity has its limits. Because AI models leverage patterns in existing data, their ideas are likely to default to the familiar unless users apply targeted techniques like persona-based prompts, hybrid queries, and step-by-step inference to guide them toward more unconventional thinking.

Without that discipline, the authors write, the ideas generated by AI can become increasingly similar, even if teams feel more productive.

This article also explores new models of human-AI collaboration. In some settings, AI takes the lead by generating the initial concept and refining the language. In some cases, they may act as thought partners, examining assumptions or mimicking customer responses. The authors note that flexibility is already impacting marketing, product development, and strategic planning.
