AI-powered ambient care adapts to real-world behavior through mobile interaction to support continuous and silent recovery anywhere.

Orbit Services Inc. announced major advances in the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning in addiction recovery, introducing a new category of care called ambient care. It is a continuously adapting, intelligent recovery environment that operates silently in the background of a person's daily life. The program is rolled out to patients through licensed and certified addiction care clinicians. A demo is also available.

This product is included in the Orbiit Recovery Platform.

Unlike traditional treatment models that rely on temporary appointments, self-reporting, or crisis-driven interventions, ambient care is designed to sense, learn, and respond to human behavior through daily interactions with mobile devices. The result is recovery support that is ever-present, non-intrusive, and responsive to real-world actions rather than retrospective conversations.

This technology does not shame, pressure, or annihilate. Learn, wait, respond, and adjust. That's what ambient systems do: they work with their environment, rather than demanding your attention. ”

— Bert Carroll, Chief Technology Officer, Orbit Services Inc.

What is ambient care?

Ambient care refers to care that exists around people rather than on them.

In the Orbiit Recovery ecosystem, ambient care is delivered through an intelligent system that observes how individuals interact with their phones: timing of responses, patterns of engagement, consistency, avoidance behaviors, and cognitive signals embedded in everyday micro-interactions. These signals are analyzed using machine learning to infer emotional states, changes in motivation, and relapse risk without requiring continuous self-disclosure.

“Human actions leave a mark,” said Bart Carroll, CTO of Orbit Services Inc.
“When someone interacts with their device, when they don't use it, how their patterns change over time, etc., there are far more signals in there than a weekly question asking how they're feeling. Ambient care is about listening to those signals respectfully, intelligently, and continuously.”

Intelligent technology that learns about people

At the core of Orbiit's ambient care model is an AI-driven learning engine that adapts to each individual over time. Rather than applying static rules, the system builds a personalized behavioral baseline and detects deviations from it, often before they are consciously or verbally recognized.

Clinicians and healthcare organizations are provided with advanced interfaces to transform these signals into actionable insights, including:

Sober Score – Real-time engagement and stability metrics

Risk Score – Predictive modeling of recurring vulnerabilities

Behavioral Insight Streams – Pattern recognition over short time intervals

Care teams can target specific behaviors such as withdrawal, avoidance, or inconsistency and dynamically increase or decrease the intensity of intervention. This allows treatment to scale precisely as needed, rather than escalating only after a relapse occurs by default.

“Ambient care allows us to see behavior before it becomes a crisis,” said Dan Francis, CEO of Orbit Services Inc.
“For the first time, recovery support can be adapted to the person in real time, rather than a program. This is a fundamental change in how addiction care works.”

Delivered to where life happens

Orbiit's ambient care model is primarily delivered through SMS-based micro-interventions, making it accessible across lifestyle, location, and socio-economic boundaries. Interventions occur in small, manageable moments, measured in seconds rather than sessions, allowing support to be seamlessly integrated into daily routines.

Because this system is always present but nonjudgmental, engagement remains high even among people who have previously tried multiple treatments.

“Technology is not meant to shame, pressure or annihilate,” Carroll added.
“It learns, it waits, it reacts, it adjusts. That's what an ambient system does. It works in conjunction with the environment, rather than demanding your attention.”

A new direction for addiction recovery

Ambient care represents a shift away from a reactive model of asking, “What happened?” Toward a predictive system that quietly asks, “What's changing?”

By combining AI, machine learning, behavioral science, and human clinical monitoring, Orbiit is redefining how recovery support is delivered, moving it from isolated moments of care to a continuous, adaptive ecosystem.
