Meta announces Muse Image, its latest AI image generation model across the Meta AI app, Instagram Stories, and WhatsApp, expanding its suite of consumer AI tools with image creation, editing, and visual transformation capabilities.

Developed by Meta Superintelligence Labs and internally codenamed Mango, Muse Image is available free for daily use, but subscription-based access is planned if users exceed specified usage limits.

This release adds a variety of AI-powered creative features, including text-to-image generation, prompt-based image editing, customizable visual effects, and commerce-focused experiences. At the same time, one of the features that allows AI-generated images to incorporate eligible content from Instagram’s public accounts has sparked a debate about user privacy and content reuse.

Muse Image enables AI creation and editing across metaapps

Muse Image is designed to support a variety of creative tasks within the Meta ecosystem. Users can generate images from text prompts, edit existing photos using AI, remove unnecessary objects, and create visuals to share across Meta’s platforms.

To simplify image creation, the model includes preset prompts to allow users to explore different creative styles. Meta also highlighted the ability to generate customized visuals through natural language prompts and extend AI-assisted editing beyond basic image enhancements. The company is also introducing new AI-powered effects for Instagram Stories, allowing users to apply customizable filters and image transformations directly within the platform.

Beyond social sharing, Meta is integrating Muse Image into its commerce experience. At the launch, the company demonstrated how users can visualize furniture from Facebook Marketplace in their homes before purchasing, showing how generative AI can support everyday shopping decisions.

Instagram’s public content feature sparks privacy debate

Among Muse Image’s features, there is one that is particularly noteworthy. Users can tag other people’s public Instagram accounts with their profile to generate AI images with targeted content. According to Meta, the feature works through Instagram’s existing content repurposing settings. If desired, users can disable public content reuse through these controls.

However, this feature relies on an opt-out model rather than explicitly asking users to opt-in, raising debates about user awareness and consent. Some users have wondered whether it is necessary to require public account holders to actively approve the use of their content before incorporating it into AI-generated images.

Meta also states that users may not receive notifications when public content is used through these AI features, although available account settings still allow users to control the reuse of their content.

Meta continues to expand its consumer AI portfolio

Muse Image represents Meta’s latest step in incorporating generative AI across its consumer products. In addition to image generation and editing, the company confirmed that Muse Video, an AI-powered video generation model, is already in development.

The rollout follows Meta’s broader efforts to integrate AI across content creation, communications, advertising and commerce. By bringing AI-powered creative tools directly into widely used consumer applications, the company is expanding the ways users interact with generative AI in their daily workflows.

At the same time, this announcement highlights the growing importance of transparency and user control as AI capabilities become more deeply integrated into social platforms. While Meta positions Muse Image as a creative tool, discussions around the reuse of public content suggest that privacy and consent will continue to be central to the conversation around consumer AI capabilities.
