In a video published today on YouTube Shorts, Joanna Stern criticized Apple for allowing AI-generated knockoffs of her book to continue to appear on Apple Books. Here are the details:
AI-generated clones are a common problem for book authors
2 years ago, just after publication Burn Book: A technology love storyKara Swisher cautioned against the wave of AI-generated knockoffs that have flooded Amazon, copying both the cover and content of books.
When she brought this issue to her attention, other authors said they were also facing the same problem. At the time, Ms. Swisher said she raised the matter with Amazon’s leadership, which worked to curb counterfeiting of her books, even though most authors did not have similar access.
Now Joanna Stern has raised a similar issue, but this time it involves Apple Books. In a short YouTube video published earlier today, Stern said the following shortly after his book: I’m not a robot: A year of using AI to do (almost) everything. When it was released, she discovered more than 10 AI-generated knockoffs on the platform. Many had similar covers, but at least one was published with her name slightly misspelled.
Stern said she took the issue to Apple, which moved to remove the book from Apple Books. However, it didn’t take long for other versions to come back.
In the video, Stern also says that while Amazon seems to have gotten better at dealing with AI-generated copycats of best-selling books, he still found (and purchased) two workbooks based on his books. Amazon has since removed both listings.
Returning to Apple, the company told Stern that in addition to its transparency and disclosure rules regarding AI-generated content on Apple Books, its policies “strictly prohibit content that misleads customers or infringes copyright.”
