video transcript
Akiko Fujita: Well, as generative AI programs like ChatGPT grow in popularity, so does the concern about how they might affect our work. Yahoo Finance reporter girlfriend Allie Garfinkle conducts research on workers’ concerns. Ally, I feel like we talk about fears about AI every day. What does this particular survey show?
Ally Garfinkel: That’s why Americans are so worried about AI impacting their jobs. As an aside, Akiko, you said this is what we knew. However, we are starting to see real data. Recent research by Checkr sheds some light on what these hopes and fears really are. And in fact, I love to start with something with a little optimism.
Fifty-seven percent of respondents said they would take a pay cut in exchange for an AI-powered four-day work week. Now, actually, I say optimism because it sounds so good. This sounds like people are convinced that automation really has a positive effect on their jobs. give them back their time
But from here on, the data changes significantly, especially with respect to millennials. For example, 77% of his millennials said they would invest their own money to improve their knowledge of AI to avoid being replaced at work. And it goes one step further, with a total of 78% of respondents and 82% of millennials concerned that AI tools will affect their salaries.
I want to sit here and say, as a millennial, I’m not worried about this. that’s not true. Nor is it true to say that some of these concerns are unjustified. The reality is that the people who know the most about AI, the people who know the most about technology, say jobs will definitely be affected by his AI revolution.
In fact, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared his thoughts on how AI could impact jobs when he testified before Congress just this month.
Sam Altman: I believe there is much better work on the other side of this and that today’s work is even better. I think GPT-4 will fully automate some jobs. And it will produce new things that we believe are much better.
Ally Garfinkel: I don’t know what they took away from it. But what I hear is that before AI can create jobs, it will become a job killer.
Akiko Fujita: OK, Allie Garfinkel, I’ve got an update. I’m really thankful to you.
