George Clooney has joined the chorus of Hollywood stars expressing concern about the rise of artificial intelligence, but he isn’t mincing words. He calls the wave of deepfakes and synthetic videos “dangerous” and says the industry is facing an identity crisis unlike anything it’s seen before. “There have been some really awful things where they’ve done or said things that I’ve never done or said and put me out. It’s dangerous,” Clooney told Variety, recounting his experience watching AI-generated videos of himself online.
“It’s a danger to your family. It’s complicated, but the genie is out of the bottle and I’m not sure what we’re going to do,” he said. The Ocean’s Eleven star, who is usually known for his easygoing charm and easy calm, acknowledged that Hollywood is unsettled not only by the existence of deepfakes, but also by how sophisticated they are. And recent events have particularly spooked the industry, he says.
Sora 2: The update that made Hollywood nervous
Clooney cited OpenAI’s latest text-to-video model, Sora 2, as the moment many in Hollywood realized that AI-generated video could no longer be dismissed as a novelty. “Everyone was shocked because all of a sudden there was a huge increase in quality. It’s scary,” he said.
In fact, when OpenAI first announced an early version of Sora earlier this year, filmmakers were surprised by how photorealistic and cinematic the clips looked. The second version, Sora 2, takes that realism even further, now being able to generate cinematic quality footage from simple text prompts. For an industry built on visual storytelling, that development landed like a twist in the script that no one expected.
Hollywood studios have previously experimented with AI tools, primarily for special effects, dubbing, and de-aging actors. But the leap to fully generated scenes and performances has actors and filmmakers wondering where the human touch fits in.
Still, Clooney sees a silver lining. In his words, AI may be good at imitating faces and voices, but it can’t recreate stardom. “It’s not that easy to make a star,” he said. “You can’t explain exactly what makes someone a star. It’s not what they look like. It’s something out of the ordinary, and it’s hard to find it. They’ll have the same problems as us.”
Hollywood vs AI
Clooney’s warning comes at a time when the entertainment industry is still recovering from last year’s massive writers’ and actors’ strikes, both of which were largely driven by concerns that AI would encroach on creative jobs. The Writers Guild of America fought to prevent studios from replacing human writers with AI-generated scripts, while the actors union SAG-AFTRA called for strict limits on the use of digital replicas.
Actors such as Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, and Keanu Reeves have all spoken out about unauthorized deepfakes using their likenesses. Johansson, in particular, made headlines when OpenAI used a voice eerily similar to hers on ChatGPT, causing legal and public relations headaches for the company. Reeves has long had a clause in his film contract prohibiting digital manipulation of his performance, but Hanks has warned fans that an AI version of him could easily appear in ads or movies “without a single sign-off.”
Filmmakers are also feeling anxious. Everywhere All at Once directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert recently urged creators to think carefully before using AI tools, saying they risk “automating the weirdness that makes stories human.” Against this backdrop, Clooney’s comments reflect broader concerns across Hollywood, not just about the job but about credibility.
For now, Clooney believes that while AI can convincingly fake faces and fabricate lines, it still won’t be able to contain the magic of real star power. But that comfort may not last long, as the technology behind tools like Sora 2 is evolving at light speed. And if Hollywood’s leading figures are this worried, it’s no wonder the rest of the industry is taking notice. Clooney said it best: “The genie is out of the bottle, and no one knows how to put it back in.”
