Github CEO Thomas Dohmke says developers must take the risk of accepting AI and becoming obsolete. He predicts that AI will generate most of the code in a few years.
Github CEO Thomas Dohmke has issued a harsh message to developers around the world. There is a risk of adapting to artificial intelligence or becoming irrelevant. In X's detailed post, Dohmke did not etch words. “The evidence is clear: either embrace AI or get out of this career,” he said.
According to him, AI plans to write 90% of all codes within the next 2-5 years. But rather than panic, Dohmke claims that the developers are showing optimism. Many people are actively learning how to work with AI tools and can step into new roles that require improved prompt skills, reviewing machine-generated code, and higher-order thinking.
“This is no longer a question of productivity. It's a matter of reinvention,” he added.
Dohmke also believes that this change must begin at the education level. He argued that coding education needs to evolve beyond syntactic drills. Instead, students should be trained to question AI-generated answers, think critically, and gain a deeper understanding of system-level design.
His comments follow an internal GitHub study that tracked how 22 developers are currently using AI in their workflows. The findings revealed that people who embraced technology experienced completely significant changes not only in how they behave, but in how they view their careers. Developers reported increased ambition, improved problem solving, and increased job satisfaction.
“They don't write less code, they allow for more complex and system-level work,” Dohmke says.
He emphasized that AI will change their roles rather than replacing developers. Coders are increasingly becoming system designers, reviewers and AI directors. One developer casually put it together, saying, “My next title might be the creative director of code.”
