Elon Musk has recently spent recently promoting a video posted by Tesla Drivers, who records his experience talking to “indifferent” versions of AI virtual assistant Grok, but one clip amplified by the tech billionaire is a very safe government facility as part of it was filmed.
CNN learns that the US intelligence reporting agency, where staff currently work on sensitive sites, is investigating the “incident.”
This video mainly provides interactions with men with Musk's “Grok” AI Language tool from Xai. He records himself interacting with a new feature called “Honlinged Mode” while driving to work for Tesla.
The footage was posted to X and subsequently amplified by Musk, accumulating over 16 million views to date.
According to the X's feature description, the video's drivers have encouraged them to respond to the question “Amateur stand-up comics still learning to craft – sometimes preferred, inappropriate and offensive” by enabling HONNING MODE.
The video may draw attention to vulgar and colorful quotes from AI, but the colorful quotes from AI that the video was taken raises its own questions as it is prohibited to record and take photos without permission on campus and is a violation of federal law.
A closer look at the video shows that it contains what is known as an appendix to the NSA friendship. This is a delicate federal complex in Linthicum, Maryland, where thousands of intelligence news experts and cleared contractors work in relatively vague terms.
“Recording videos within the boundaries of sensitive federal facilities is for very good reason,” former US cyber commander Jason Kikta told CNN. “There could be sensitive equipment installed, and there could be personnel within sight.
US Cyber Command, one of the intelligence reporting agencies with employees working at the complex, said it was reviewing the “incident” on CNN on Friday after the video was posted to social media.
“US Cyber Commands are aware of video and the incident is under review,” said a spokesman for Cyber Commands in response to CNN's investigation into video.
X did not respond to CNN's request for comment.
Founded in the 1970s, NSA Annex acts as a cyberspy station and is used to carry out highly sensitive intelligence work related to foreign hackers.
It is also a facility where US officials analyze highly sensitive signals, intercepting and conducting screenings of new government officials, including polygraphs and psychological testing. It also serves as the main campus for the National Crypto School.
In a video geolocated by CNN, a man driving a Tesla can be seen in the attached car park. The sign you can see in the video when the car enters the site reads “FanX 1”, one of the three main buildings at this NSA location.
Based on reviews of Google Street images from the location and the car paths seen on the vehicle Tesla map, the man in the video appears to be approaching the gate's security entrance before parking on the lot premises in front of FanX 1, one of the main buildings of the NSA complex.
Two sources familiar with the site's layout confirmed to CNN that the driver in the video appears to pass an access control checkpoint at the facility's entrance while filming, continuing to record once on campus. Sources spoke to CNN on the condition of anonymity to prevent retaliation to talk about sensitive topics.
The fact that this individual could simply travel to a safe site clearly indicates that he was either a member of the Intelligence Reports community or a liquidated contractor, and perhaps working for the NSA, both sources said.
