International student Jia Li, using a pseudonym, shared her experience of having more than half of her essays flagged as AI-generated by an AI detector. Her flagged content included sentences she wrote in Chinese and translated into English using a computer, as well as sentences she herself wrote in English.

Additionally, the use of translation and grammar tools by non-native speakers can reduce the complexity of sentences, causing detectors to flag such content as AI-generated.

In response to these concerns, universities and AI companies alike say that the initial detection by these tools is not conclusive evidence of fraud, but rather a trigger for further investigation.

For example, the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney uses Turnitin’s new AI write detection tool. A UNSW spokesperson stressed that the tool’s findings do not automatically lead to allegations of academic misconduct and that it will launch further investigations.

Similarly, a spokesperson for ZeroGPT, one of the tools included in the Stanford University study, said the company’s detectors are accurate and not biased against non-English-speaking authors. He added that the company is “always looking for ways to improve” its service.

Ragwa Gopal, CEO of education management company M Square Media (MSM), commented on the situation. “It is important to have a balanced approach to the introduction of AI in education. It’s equally important to avoid penalizing non-national students unfairly,” he said.
