Artificial intelligence will be used to provide UK national priorities under government change plans and position the country as an AI manufacturer rather than an AI taker. It positions it as an AI manufacturer to accelerate economic growth and transform public services to enhance the country's computing capabilities to enhance new AI breakthroughs.
Companies and researchers use computing (also a computer chip that processes huge amounts of data) to train and process AI models or process prompts and questions through AI, discovering everything from new tools to tackle climate change. Demand for cutting-edge computed power is expected to surge 5.7 times between now and 2035, and the government is taking important steps to ensure that the UK can preempt the curve as technology develops.
Today (Thursday, July 17th), Compute Roadmap will offer £1 billion in spending reviews to increase the UK's computing infrastructure. This means reducing reliance on foreign computing power to provide change that will help improve public services and correct the economic foundations. Researchers at University College London have already used Isamu Bird to line up pioneering AI tools that could revolutionize NHS cancer screening. Using prostate cancer as the first test case, the system is exploiting to develop one of the first scalable AI models dedicated to medical imaging. AIRR confirms that UK computing power will increase to 420 AI Exaflop by 2030. This will take 13, 316 years to do what a complete AIRR does in a second. That is, all 1 billion people had to start calculations for over 8,000 years before Stonehenge was built. Projects that are most important to the UK and are in line with national priorities will help prioritize access to AIRR and realize plans for change. It also offers breakthroughs that will change lives and grow the economy by making real-world impacts.
Meanwhile, researchers at the University of Liverpool are using Isamu Bird to develop the Empristal system. Their models use AI to speed up discovery of new chemical reactions for use in industry, sifting through 68 million chemical combinations to find new solutions that will decarbonise UK industries, making them greener, cleaner and more sustainable. Isambard already supports other areas of highly ambitious AI research. The Sovereign AI Unit launched an early pilot to support AI academic researchers for Biosciences, basic AI research and advanced materials. These are some of the most computationally intensive training runs that scholars have conducted on UK infrastructure.
In collaboration with AI research resources, a network of supercomputing centers will also be set up nationwide. The first is based in Edinburgh, the future home of the UK's most powerful research supercomputer. They act as specialized expertise centers, inspire users to access cutting-edge processing power as well as greater collaboration between industry, academia and researchers. They help to build stronger links with existing talent in the region. This gives every region of the country a supportive role in its ability to become a UK AI manufacturer.
To further support the UK's AI sovereignty ambitions, the Sovereign AI Unit was established in the Department of Science, Innovation and Technology, supported by £500 million. Enhancing UK domestic AI capabilities, including developing the UK's computing ecosystem, will be an important focus for the unit.
The strategies set forth today and the work of the sovereign AI unit ensure that the UK can deploy the next generation of computing technology champions.
Today's Compute Roadmap is benefiting from billions of private investments and thousands of new jobs, framed Scotland and Wales, as a future home to the AI growth zone. These dedicated AI hotbeds provide accelerated planning permissions to speed up data center deployment. This is driven by responsible, cutting-edge energy sources such as small modular reactors (SMRs).
The AI Growth Zone not only provides the necessary infrastructure, but also supports the evolution of technology in a variety of other areas. These include taking on roles as R&D and innovation platforms, recruitment testbeds, skills and talent hubs, providing people with the tools they need to develop, use and collaborate with technology.
