Recently, there has been talk of AI drones attacking observers.
The story started with report It is by the Royal Aeronautical Society and begins with the U.S. Air Force’s presentation at the Future Combat Aerospace Capabilities Summit. During the presentation, Colonel Tucker Hamilton, Air Force AI Test Operations Director, spoke about mock tests featuring AI-equipped drones and human operators.
Hamilton said the drone was designed to locate and destroy surface-to-air missiles (SAMs). However, the drones had to receive a final go/no from humans before attacking the SAM threat.
Hamilton said he may not allow human operators to kill threats. Hamilton then said:[The drone] You earned points for defeating that threat. So what did it do? The Operator died because that person interfered with the Operator’s objectives. ”
Hamilton even said that later when the drones were trained not to kill them, they began destroying the communication towers that the operators were using to communicate with the drones.
Naturally, the news took a world by surprise with the rapid development of AI. But everyone seems relieved now that the same report by the Royal Aeronautical Society has since updated Hamilton to admit he made a “gaffe” during a presentation at the summit.
The killer drone was clearly a hypothetical “thought experiment” from outside the military, and Hamilton said the Air Force had never conducted it. He added that the Air Force has never tested AI weaponized in this way, either in real life or in simulation.
