Qualcomm has announced the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, the latest system for mobile devices that details advances in CPU performance, AI processing and video capabilities.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 features a third-generation Qualcomm Oryon CPU, which is positioned by the company as “the fastest mobile CPU ever.” According to Qualcomm, the chip is tailored to both advanced and everyday applications, providing users with a set of extensions for multitasking, gaming and on-device artificial intelligence (AI).
CPU and GPU performance
The company claims that the new CPU offers a 20% performance improvement compared to its predecessor. This is complemented by updated Graphic Processing Unit (GPU) technology under the Qualcomm Adreno brand. The company says it will enhance the gaming experience with a 23% rise in graphical performance. When it comes to AI features, the Qualcomm Hexagon Neural Processing Unit (NPU) is reportedly increased speeds by 37% on previous models.
Chris Patrick, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Mobile Handsets at Qualcomm Technologies, commented on the role of AI in the new Snapdragon platform.
“With Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 you're at the heart of your mobile experience. You can see your personalized AI agents and hear and think in real time. The Snapdragon8Elite Gen 5 will push the boundaries of personal AI and allow you to experience the future of today's mobile technology.”
AI and User Experience
Qualcomm describes the 8 Elite Gen 5 series as designed for the “Agent AI Era.” On-device AI systems are designed to promote personalized digital assistants that adapt to the needs of users. The company emphasizes that these AI models employ real-time sensing and continuous learning, allowing positive recommendations and situational responses. Qualcomm notes that user data for these features remains on the device.
The platform's AI capabilities are intended to work in multiple applications, providing the ability for digital assistants to act contextually depending on the user's behavior and preferences.
Video and creative tools
For video production, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 introduces support for advanced professional video (APV) Codec. Qualcomm is the first implementation of its kind on a mobile platform. This is further supported by the AI-driven camera feature. This is aimed at giving content creators more control over both recording and post-production improvements, according to the company.
Qualcomm said the tools aim to provide studio-grade video capture on mobile devices and expand the possibilities of professional video production from traditional camera hardware.
