Osceola County, Florida – The Osceola County School District is considering changes to its student code of conduct that would limit the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and personal wireless devices in class.
On Tuesday, the school board will hold a workshop on the proposed revisions before its regular meeting.
Every student in Osceola County is already equipped with a school-issued iPad or computer for use in the classroom.

“They do most of their work there. Textbooks and everything is there,” parent Jean-Marc Chareaudeau said.
Charodeaux added that school-issued technology is already being monitored.
“There’s some kind of regulation, so they do all sorts of crazy things and they know it,” he says.
State law currently prohibits cell phone use during school hours, but the district is considering going further. One of the proposed amendments would extend the restriction to all wireless communication devices, including tablets, smartwatches, cameras and smart glasses.
“They shouldn’t be doing that in school because they’re given everything they need,” Charodeau said.
The district is also considering revisions specifically focused on the use of AI during exams. The proposed language states that students may not use AI tools or applications to generate answers to questions on district, state, or national standardized assessments.
Some parents said they saw AI as a valuable learning tool in certain environments.
“I personally feel that if they do it in a controlled way, they can make it better in some ways,” parent William Collazo said.
But when it comes to evaluation, Collazo feels there is no place for AI.
“I don’t see how it benefits testing, at least when I talk about this with my son, because I know it shouldn’t be used for any kind of testing,” he said. “We’ll see if they incorporate it in other ways, but we won’t know during testing.”
