ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – Climate Change Minister Musaddiq Malik on Tuesday urged the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to strengthen disaster preparedness and improve monitoring of climate vulnerabilities, saying AI could help the country better manage climate risks.
Malik highlighted the important role of AI in climate governance, public policy and disaster risk management during a panel discussion at the National Artificial Intelligence Workshop held in Islamabad on Tuesday.
“The most important and impactful application of artificial intelligence lies in its predictive and preventive capabilities,” he said in a statement shared by the Ministry of Information, noting that Pakistan faces serious challenges with sparse and fragmented data that complicates effective policy making.
“Through AI-based modeling, we can design interventions that produce maximum impact with limited resources.”
The statement came a day after Pakistan launched Indus AI Week, which runs until February 15, to align policy direction, industry adoption, talent development and innovation under a single harmonized framework, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that Islamabad would invest $1 billion in AI by 2030 to modernize the country’s digital economy.
Malik said AI can play an important role in identifying climate change vulnerabilities on the ground and can act as a watchdog by integrating multiple technologies and monitoring systems.
This integration enables early identification of potential disasters, allowing for timely and preventive intervention before damage occurs.
He said AI was driving a global revolution, but warned that its next steps, particularly the emergence of AI agents, would have a significant impact on jobs.
“AI agents are likely to replace certain jobs and functions,” he said. “We need to pay close attention to how we integrate AI into public services and ensure timely and efficient redeployment and retraining of affected personnel.”
The minister said that while technology can bring short-term benefits, its sustainability depends on innovation.
“Temporary productivity gains can be achieved through the adoption of technology, but sustained progress requires innovation,” he added.
