Hundreds of Microsoft employees are currently working on the Athena project
Reuters – Bloomberg News reported Thursday that Microsoft is working with Advanced Micro Devices Inc. to expand into the chipmaker’s artificial intelligence processors, citing people familiar with the matter.
AMD’s stock rose 9% on the news, while Microsoft’s stock rose about 1%.
The software giant is providing financial backing to boost AMD’s efforts, reportedly working with AMD on a homegrown Microsoft processor for AI workloads, codenamed Athena. the book says.
Hundreds of employees working in Microsoft’s silicon division are currently working on the Athena project, the report adds.
Microsoft did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment, while AMD declined.
