Microsoft has introduced Copilot Mode, an experimental feature designed to convert Microsoft Edge to an AI-powered web browser.

As the company explained on Monday, this new mode will convert the interface of Edge, while the new tabs will display a single input box that combines chat, search, and web navigation features.

Once Copilot mode is enabled, AI assistants can analyze all open browser tabs with user permission, compare information, and assist in a variety of tasks, such as researching vacation rentals.

“When you turn on Copilot mode, you enable innovative AI features that enhance your browser. It's not just waiting for you to click, but also predicting what you want to do next.

“It keeps you browsing, slashing through clutter, removing friction, unlocking flow. Everything is built on the best Microsoft standards, privacy and performance trusted by billions of people and businesses around the world.

Copilot Mode features natural voice navigation, allowing users to speak commands directly to Copilot for tasks such as opening comparison tabs between products and searching for web page information.

Microsoft plans to expand the capabilities of Copilot Mode to include additional advanced actions, such as booking reservations and managing tasks on behalf of users.

Redmond says the data collection policy adheres to the company's privacy standards and allows users to control how information is shared through personalization settings.

Additionally, a visual indicator will be displayed when Copilot is active, allowing users to turn off the feature via browser settings.

“Browser data is processed and protected according to the Microsoft Privacy Statement. When Copilot is watching or listening, there are always clear visual clues in the browser,” says Lyndersay.

“Copilot Mode also lets you turn the experience on and off as you would like with Edge settings. If you choose not to turn on Copilot mode, you can continue browsing Edge as normal.”

Copilot is a limited time free opt-in feature for all Copilot markets, only on Edge for Windows and Mac systems.
