Honestly, does anyone actually want this?
Today, Meta announced its latest AI project. It offers a custom feed of AI-generated video clips called “Vibes.”
Because it sounds cool.
As you can see in the images in these examples, Vibes presents a full-screen display of purely AI-generated video clips created by users within the Meta AI app. You can scroll through the clips like Tiktok and Reels and check all the creepy valley-shaped odd things people generated from random prompts, almost unrealistic, but to the right.
The second screenshot above shows the editor. Viewers can also share clips generated to their own AI, or remix what people are already sharing in the app. This is another element that Meta wants to promote.
“With vibes you can start from scratch, use content you already have, or remix videos from your feed to make them yours. Add new visuals, add a layer of music, adjust styles and adjust to your liking. Also, if you see Meta AI videos on Instagram, you can tap through and remix them in the Meta AI app.”
Also, be aware that under the bottom function bar in the first screenshot above, the Meta AI app continues to be the home of AI glasses. Meta appears to want the app to be a new central hub for AI projects.
This is probably better than stopping all the junk generated by this AI on people's Facebook and Instagram feeds. But again, both apps are already upset with AI Slops, and there's no doubt that those posting AI Creations to this new option will also share with other profiles (note: Meta says that you can easily share clips from vibes to other apps).
Why don't they do that?
Meta made pumping out junk generated by random AI very easy. This gives scammers and spammers just a reason to keep bending over this crap.
And Meta considers this to be a positive showcase of how good AI-generation tools are and how to create anything just by entering it into existence.
But for most people, the question is really “Why?”
Why do people want to share something like this? Generally, it's not creative, not original, and a bit offensive. This will give you a spooky valley mood, and overall, these clips are like fever dreams and hallucinations, which will encourage your brain to instinctively repel.
Of course, it's a generalization, and there are AI artists who are creating original, interesting content with these new tools. However, allowing everyone to post their own stuff does not seem to promote quality or obsessiveness in that these works do not represent the real living experiences of real people, or it does not seem to be social.
But Meta seems very excited about it, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg sharing some of his favorite vibe clips.
And they get better over time, and Meta has recently partnered with Midjourney to improve its video generation model.
So, soon, they may look more realistic and more impressive. But it's still a feed of AI slops and in my view it holds little real value other than demonstrating the meta-generating AI capabilities.
And I'm not generally down about AI. There are many applications where AI tools are driving profits, and even AI visual generation can add value, such as creating a VR world from an AI prompt. It could open up a variety of new experiences, but increasing focus on AI video seems like a backward step that contributes to the spread of misinformation, simply by increasing the amount of fake trash.
But while Meta appears to think this will happen, X's owner Elon Musk promotes Vine's return in almost the same AI format as this project (we also note the similarities between “Vibes” and “Vine”.
A portrayal of famous characters who say endless streams of AI slops full of random clips of people transforming into animals, offensive things, racist stereotypes, cartoon characters, and more.
However, there are scenes of fake terrorist attacks, realistic UFO footage, and politician battle scenes.
I don't know if any app wants to encourage this. But check out the atmosphere.
