The Linux Foundation's influence continues to grow throughout the open source world. The organization currently hosts significant projects across Linux kernel development, cloud infrastructure, and AI.

Its reach spans over 900 open source projects that power much of the modern Internet and enterprise infrastructure.

The foundation is currently bringing together leading technology companies to form the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF). This new umbrella organization aims to advance autonomous AI systems through open collaboration.

organization Provides neutral governance for agent AI technology development. For those who don't know, Agentic AI refers to autonomous systems that can independently make decisions and coordinate actions. This is a major technology shift from conversational AI assistants to agents that can perform complex tasks.

The foundation is Contributing to three major open source projects. Each addresses a different aspect of building reliable AI agent systems.

  1. Origin of Model Context Protocol (MCP) human. This protocol allows AI models to connect to external tools, data sources, and applications. The company released MCP in November 2024, and it has since been adopted by major AI platforms including Claude, Cursor, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini, VS Code, and ChatGPT.
  2. The goose is blockDonations to the Foundation. Open source frameworks provide a local-first environment for building AI agents. Combine language models with extensible tools and MCP-based integration.
  3. Origin of AGENTS.md OpenAI. This markdown-based standard provides consistent, project-specific guidance for AI coding agents. The simple format allows agents to work reliably across different repositories and build systems.

The Linux Foundation aims to ensure that these technologies are developed transparently by preventing vendor lock-in and promoting interoperability between different AI systems through open governance.

eight'platinum' Members support the Agentic AI Foundation Each has a membership worth $350,000. These include Amazon Web Services, Anthropic, Block, Bloomberg, Cloudflare, Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI.

Foundation also includes 18 inchesgold'member($200,000 each) and 23'silver'member($10,000 each). “”fellow' layer is available for free For approved nonprofit, academic, and government organizations.

Speaking on the occasion, Jim Zemlin, CEO of the Linux Foundation, added:

AI is entering a new phase as conversational systems transition to autonomous agents working together. Within just one year, MCP, AGENTS.md, and goose have become essential tools for developers building this new class of agent technology.

By consolidating these projects under AAIF, we can grow them with the transparency and stability that only open governance can provide. The Linux Foundation is proud to serve as a neutral home where we continue to build the AI infrastructure the world depends on.

Organizations interested in membership Visit the AAIF membership page for more information on benefits and registration. The Foundation's GitHub organization will host contributed projects as we transition to community governance.
