While resumes and cover letters typically form the basis of a job search, creativity through technology is quickly becoming the mainstay when trying to land a new position.

In fact, searches for “AI resume” and “video job application” have increased by 310% and 125%, respectively, in the last year alone.1
UK job vacancies fell by 209,000 in January2Adobe Express explored how to use AI, video, and TikTok to help applications stand out from a saturated influx of applicants.
The survey found that 42% of workers use AI tools to create their resumes.368% of Gen Zers use social media to apply for jobsFour 79% of employers believe video is an essential part of the recruiting process.FiveBut how best to use each one?
Adobe Express teamed up with Funke Sadare, HR Director at Global University Systems, to explore the most effective ways to use each method when applying for a job, as well as their pros and cons.
artificial intelligence – Recent rapid advancements in AI technology are transforming productivity in the office environment, leveraging the power of AI technology with analytics, examples, and creativity to create a resume that matches both personal criteria and job requirements.
Funke explains: “AI quickly creates a resume that highlights a candidate's key skills and areas of expertise based on the information provided. It also ensures a uniform format for aesthetic appeal and can customise the resume with relevant keywords to increase the candidate's chances of passing the initial screening.”
Once you've created your template resume, it's important to tweak your personal details to make it look authentic, as the human element of your application is what will set you apart from other applicants.
Funke adds: “There are challenges when candidates use AI tools to create their CV, including concerns about reliability, a possible loss of critical thinking and the risk of bias in AI screening. However, candidates should adopt a balanced approach and combine AI assistance with personal input to ensure the overall outcome is a true reflection of their experience, expertise and skillset. Candidates may make it through the screening stage and receive a job offer, but it's important they demonstrate their ability to effectively perform and retain the role.”
Video Applications – The growing trend of video applications allows recruiters to save time and gain a deeper understanding of candidate personas while delivering a different candidate experience than traditional methods.
Funke recommends, “When creating a video job application, candidates should employ the following effective strategies to present themselves more confidently and make a lasting impression on potential employers.”
- introductionStart with a warm greeting and a genuine smile, introduce yourself by name and state the position you're applying for.
- Professional Appearance: Dress appropriately just as you would if you were attending an in-person interview, and preferably dress in a way that fits the company culture.
- Elevator pitchIt is a concise summary of your skills, qualifications, areas of expertise, recent achievements and why you are the right fit for the role.
- personality: Make sure your personality shines through in your video application and reflects authenticity and enthusiasm.
- Keep it simple: If possible, keep your video application under two minutes and make every second count.”
Tick tock – TikTok currently has around 300,000 #CV and #jobapplication pieces of content, and is increasingly being used as a platform by Gen Z to showcase their expertise and experience.
Funke explains: “TikTok allows applicants to showcase their personality, creativity and communication skills in a short, impactful format. Those who actively use TikTok may find this approach appealing and relevant. That said, it's still important to maintain authenticity and professionalism in such a creative context.”
“While video applications and social media platforms like TikTok offer a unique opportunity for applicants to showcase their personality and skills, they may not be able to effectively communicate the applicant's qualifications, experience, and achievements. Additionally, while the idea of reviewing a video application is innovative and effective, it can be time-consuming for recruiters as they have to review multiple applications, which have a shorter review time than resumes and cover letters. So, using both is equally important.”
