The partnership will enable HSBC to run a self-hosted, enterprise-grade model on its own internal infrastructure, which the bank says is important for privacy, governance and scale. Over the past year, HSBC has been evaluating a wide range of LLMs as part of its technology roadmap.

According to the company, Mistral’s expertise in foundational model development provided a path to enhance its internal AI tools, including an AI productivity platform currently used by employees around the world.

The collaboration aims to streamline business processes and automate document-heavy workflows. HSBC said its teams will use Mistral’s models to generate customized business tasks for customer-facing, procurement and marketing functions. Enhance financial analysis in complex lending workflows. It also improves multilingual reasoning and translation capabilities for customer support teams that handle global interactions.

The bank also expects to improve its innovation cycle, allowing for faster prototyping and deployment of new features across departments.

Future stages of the partnership will explore customer-facing applications, including improved credit and lending processes, onboarding efforts, and more robust anti-fraud and anti-money laundering checks.

HSBC Group CEO Georges Elhederi called the partnership “an exciting step in HSBC’s technology strategy,” adding that the partnership will “empower our people with the tools to innovate, simplify their daily work, and free up time to deliver for our customers.”

Arthur Mensch, CEO and co-founder of Mistral AI, said the company’s “highly customizable, enterprise-grade, frontier AI solution will reinvent HSBC’s workflows and services while ensuring full ownership of data.”

Both organizations emphasized their commitment to responsible AI adoption, including transparency, privacy, and strong governance.
