“Whether it’s fighting superbugs with new AI-developed antibiotics or preventing online fraud, the benefits are huge.
“But as I have said for many years, appropriate safeguards are needed to ensure the safe and responsible use of AI.”
As part of an eight-week consultation to determine potential changes to the law, a government document asks whether risky AI applications and technologies should be banned entirely.

“Potentially, such as generating deepfakes to influence democratic processes or cause other deceptions, creating misinformation or disinformation, or encouraging people to self-harm. There are numerous examples and concerns of AI being used for purposes harmful to human health,” the discussion paper said.
“Inaccuracies in AI models can also cause many problems. These include unwanted biases and misleading or outright erroneous output such as ‘hallucinations’ from generative AI. ”

Algorithmic bias was one of the most real threats, according to the discussion paper.
“These include racism, where AI is used to predict recidivism that unfairly targets minority groups; educational assessment algorithms that favor students in high performing schools; [and] Hiring algorithms favor male candidates over female candidates. ”
