Google has announced the latest addition to its Workspace suite of productivity apps: Vids, an AI-powered video creation tool designed to help users quickly create and collaborate on videos for work.
Announced at the Google Cloud Next conference, Vids was released to Workspace Labs in June and provides a user-friendly interface for creating videos with AI-generated storyboards, scripts, and narration. The app seamlessly integrates with other Google Workspace tools like Docs, Sheets, and Slides, allowing users to transform existing assets like marketing copy and images into compelling videos.
“It's video editing, lighting, and production assistant all rolled into one,” Aparna Pappu, VP and GM of Google Workspace, said while introducing Vids at the conference.
One of Vids' key features is its collaboration capabilities. Like other Google Workspace tools, Vids allows team members to work on video projects simultaneously in real time, eliminating the need to email files back and forth. The app also maintains the same access controls and security measures as other Workspace tools.
To create a video with Vids, users first enter a prompt that describes their desired video content. Then, the AI generates a storyboard based on the prompt. Users can edit the storyboard by changing the order of scenes, adding transitions, and selecting a template. Users can also include an audio track by recording their own narration or using a preset voice to read the script.
Vids is designed to cater to a variety of professional video needs, including product pitches, training content, team celebration videos, etc. The app's AI-powered features are aimed at empowering users with different levels of video editing experience to create videos.

Google Vids is a tool for creating work-related videos, while Sora is a general-purpose text-to-video conversion model that can create entirely new scenes from scratch based on text instructions.
Vids is currently in limited testing and will be rolled out to additional testers in Google Labs in June of this year. The app will eventually be made available to Gemini for Workspace subscription customers.
