Chemini's Gemini launch highlights Google's push to integrate AI deeper into everyday tools, blurring the line between browsing and intelligent digital aid.
Google We've deployed Gemini in Chrome, a new feature designed to directly provide real-time AI support within the desktop version of your browser. With this tool, users can summarise articles, clarify complex concepts, receive customized recommendations while browsing, and focus Chrome on more interactive and productivity.
This feature, which is currently being deployed over the years, will be available to US users over the age of 18 using Chrome on Mac or Windows. It is not supported in incognito mode and requires Chrome to be set to English.
Once enabled, Chrome's Gemini will appear as a floating window within your browser, allowing users to chat with AI while navigating through web pages. By default, AI can use the contents of the Active Browser tab to provide context-specific responses. Users can also share or stop page content at any time via settings.
Important functions include the following capabilities:
- Summary of web content for quick takeaway
- Restructure or simplify technical explanations
- Test your knowledge and provide learning support
- Adapt recipes and recommendations to suit the needs of the user
- Compare information in real time between sources
The tool is also integrated with Google Workspace and Connected apps. For example, Gemini can summarise Gmail messages, create events in Google Calendar, add tasks to Google tasks, and provide insights from Google Docs when pages are shared. Connected apps also allow you to get location details from Google Maps and also suggest related YouTube videos.
To activate the feature, users must opt-in to the Chrome menu. Once enabled, Chrome's Gemini can be accessed from the Mac menu bar or the Windows system tray, and keyboard shortcuts allow for faster interactions.
Google emphasized that page content sharing is transparent to users marked with glowing page edges and browser tab icons. Users retain privacy controls through Chrome's AI settings that allow them to manage page content, microphones, and exact location permissions.
