Google has added several AI features to its professional video creation app, Google Vids. Announced on April 2, 2026, this update includes higher quality video export, AI music generation, and virtual avatar characters. Google launched Vids in April 2024 as a simplified tool for creating professional video content using templates, stock images, and script generation.
The biggest addition is AI-powered avatars. You will be able to create a virtual character to narrate your videos. Google allows users to keep their avatar’s voice and identity consistent between clips, while customizing their appearance, swapping out their outfits, and changing their backgrounds. This feature is aimed at content creators, educators, and businesses who want to produce videos without being on camera themselves.
TikTok has been developing similar virtual characters for e-commerce. MIT Technology Review reported in 2023 that these AI avatars are already being used to livestream product sales around the clock in China, generating thousands of dollars for brands every day. Google’s move brings the same concept to the Workspace ecosystem, giving companies a direct path to creating avatar-driven content at scale.
Google is also adding music generation tools powered by the Lyria 3 and Lyria 3 Pro models. Google AI Pro and Ultra subscription users can generate custom soundtracks ranging from 30-second clips to 3-minute tracks. With this tool, you can describe the mood and tone you want, and the system will generate an original track to match your video.
In terms of video quality, Google Vids now uses the latest Veo 3.1 model for high-quality exports. All personal Vids accounts receive 10 generations of free videos each month. Additionally, additional capacity is available through paid subscriptions.
Two other features round out the update. Google has released the Vids Screen Recorder Chrome extension that allows users to capture content from anywhere on the web. Vids users can also publish videos directly to YouTube, bypassing the download and re-upload steps.
Google first added AI image-to-video generation to Vids in August 2025, followed by the improved Veo AI video generation tool in January 2026. This latest update pushes the tool further into the space occupied by both dedicated video creation platforms and social media apps.
Google is positioning Vids as the default video tool for Workspace users, tying it directly into the existing ecosystem of Docs, Slides, and now YouTube.
