Leaders from the skills training and higher education sectors will soon meet to explore the opportunities and risks of generative artificial intelligence. They are brought together by the Australian Independent Higher Education Council (ITECA), the supreme body representing independent providers in the skills training, tertiary and international education sectors.
“Generative AI poses a major threat to academic integrity for many higher education professionals. It’s an important issue,” said Troy Williams, chief executive officer of ITECA.
ITECA members also recognize that generative AI offers new avenues to motivate students to learn.
“Generative AI offers exciting opportunities for skills training and higher education providers, including the ability to create personalized learning experiences and develop interactive educational content. can enhance simulation and virtual training environments and create new forms of assessment and feedback,” Williams said.
Opposing this technology is not an option, according to ITECA.
“If higher education leaders do not fully consider the risks and opportunities of generative AI, they may miss innovative new ways to improve the student learning experience. “We run the risk of falling behind other higher education providers who are in the market,” Williams said.
The diverse nature of independent skills training and the higher education sector highlights the need for careful consideration of this issue by providers and regulators.
“Approximately 4,000 independent providers support approximately 87% of the 4.3 million students in skills training, and a further 140 providers support 10% of the 1.6 million students in higher education. The number of people involved and the number of students involved underscores the importance of the sector’s willingness to consider this issue,” Williams said.
Leaders from the skills training and higher education sectors will gather at the ITEC23 conference to explore the issues presented by generative artificial intelligence.
“The ITEC23 conference provides a platform for exploring the latest advances in generative AI and its impact on skills training and higher education. Together, we can ultimately shape the future of higher education,” said Williams.
The ITEC23 conference will take place at the Sofitel Gold Coast from 7-9 June 2023 and, like last year’s conference, is expected to sell out.
