One reader is worried about the impact of new advances in AI on society, but excited about how AI will change the world of video games.
In most cases, it takes years for a new technology to become mainstream and have a real impact on society as a whole. The internet is like that, VR has been around for decades already, and I think it will be a long time before self-driving cars are fully embraced. However, AI seems to have transitioned from sci-fi world to everyday reality in a matter of weeks. It’s kind of scary, especially when you read reports like that GC has already taken jobs from his Chinese video game artists.
As pointed out, perhaps voice-overs and even programmers will to some extent. If you can point to something and say, “Make something like this,” your job is likely to be in danger of being replaced by AI. Of course, this sucks for people, and it sucks for gamers who want something other than a cookie-cutter clone of something else.
If politicians had even a little bit of wisdom, they would ban humans from being replaced by AI, but apart from Italy banning ChatGPT, I don’t think anyone has done anything, but it looks worrying. It’s terrible and coupled with the pandemic and the war in Ukraine and everything else currently dragging the economy, it almost seems like a doomsday scenario. doing!
I think most of you have recently played around with chatbots and discovered how strangely real they are. Illusions are often broken when you start talking nonsense. Of course, you shouldn’t believe anything it says, but before you see it in the news, before I check it out, it’s way further than I thought.
Assuming something is done about AI ruining the job market soon (and it’s a big assumption, I’ll admit), I think it will have some big implications for video games. AI in has been stagnant for decades. I don’t think a game has touted having good AI since the days of Halo.
I’m not sure how good ChatGPT is at shooting people in video games. Not only do you have really good goals, but you don’t make incredible mistakes, you don’t get timid, you use real tactics, and most importantly, you don’t run straight. A person who behaves like
Seriously, don’t do it unless you’re a zombie.
But what I’m most excited about is AI being able to have realistic conversations, not endless loops of pre-recorded dialogue. This is what we know modern AI can do, and I think that will change everything when it starts happening in games and makes even minor characters look believable and real. You can talk about anything you can imagine, not just about it, and the AI can respond.
I hope this is used not only for dating games, but especially for large-scale role-playing games. The future of video game technology seems to be focused on artificial intelligence rather than graphics.
