CFA Institute Issues Data Science Certificate for Investment Professionals
The certificate will enable participants to learn about the use of AI and machine learning in the investment process and develop the skills needed to work at the intersection of data science and investment management.
The CFA Institute, a global association of investment professionals, Data Science Certificate for Investment Professionals Designed to provide current or prospective investment professionals with a working knowledge of the fundamentals of artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques and how they are used in the investment process.
The Data Science Certificate for Investment Professionals is suitable for individuals from a variety of backgrounds and does not require prior data science knowledge. Those most likely to benefit are current or prospective investment professionals, including but not limited to investment analysts, portfolio managers, relationship managers and traders.
What does studying for a certificate involve?
The certificate consists of five interactive courses totaling approximately 100 hours, allowing participants to work on their own time, followed by a 90-minute final assessment. Content is hands-on, application-oriented and includes educational videos, coding labs, and case studies from industry insiders.
Participants will learn how to:
- Description and evaluation of machine learning techniques
- Select and develop data visualizations using Python and R
- Apply machine learning to address investment problems
- Explain machine learning techniques to a non-expert audience
- Make investment decisions using natural language processing
- Evaluate and mitigate bias in machine learning
The following five courses are available.
- Course 1: Fundamentals of Data and Statistics
- Course 2: Machine Learning Statistics
- Course 3: Machine Learning
- Course 4: Natural Language Processing
- Course 5: Reducing Bias in Data Science Pipelines

According to the CFA Institute report The Future of Work in Investment Management: The Future of Skills and Learning, nearly two-thirds (64%) of surveyed investment professionals reported being interested in learning more about AI and machine learning. In the same survey, only 3% of investment professionals said they were already proficient with AI and machine learning concepts.
