Face taps Google Cloud to build an agent AI workforce

FairPrice Group, Singapore's largest retailer and supermarket chain, has worked with Google Cloud to deploy a variety of agent artificial intelligence (AI) applications and features designed to improve customer experience and employee efficiency.

These include smart shopping carts powered by AI, specialized in-store assistants deployed in the Fairprice Finest Store in Punggol Digital District (PDD) in Singapore, as well as an internal platform that helps staff build their own AI agents.

Vipul Chawla, group CEO of FairPrice, said the AI-powered tools are designed to make shoppers' journeys more seamless and intuitive, not only impressing shoppers, but also helping FairPrice employees work more efficiently.

The move was built on FairPrice's existing partnership with Google Cloud, and as part of the Tomorrow Initiative, embedding the latest cloud and AI technology across retail touchpoints.

First, FairPrice has strengthened its smart shopping cart with a multimodal shopping assistant built using Google Cloud's agent development kit. The assistant uses Google's Chirp 2 speech recognition model and Gemini Application Programming Interface (API) to allow conversational queries.

With enhancements, shoppers can ask their cart for recipe ideas, and AI agents combinations provide recommendations, list the ingredients they need, and make sure they have stock. It features a product search agent using Vertex AI search and a knowledge agent built into Vertex AI's search extension generation engine.

The enhanced smart shopping cart is set to be deployed in the second location, Fairprice Finest Thomson Plaza, in the fourth quarter of 2025.

Meanwhile, FairPrice offers specialized AI assistants for specific store needs. For example, Unity Pharmacy's wellness assistant at PDD Store can provide lifestyle advice and product recommendations based on body composition analyzer data. In the Wine section, digital sommeliers activated via field communications near by electronic shelf labels offer tasting notes and food pairing suggestions.

FairPrice also pilots Commerce's Vertex AI search. It is designed to better understand local context and dialect terms such as “Orh nee,” a local yum paste dessert, improving search relevance for smart cart assistants and other customer touchpoints.

Another important element of collaboration is the use of Google Agentspace, enabling FairPrice employees to build, manage and use AI agents. The platform integrates with Google Workspace to enable staff without coding experiences to create their own agents using the No Code Agent Designer.

FairPrice is already building custom creative agents for its marketing teams. Agents use Google's Imagen 4 and VEO 3 models with Vertex AI to generate promotional images and videos, create Gemini APIs to create ad copies, reducing the time and associated costs required to create ads by 100 times.

Additionally, retailers can use agent space to speed up the development of more custom agents for features such as HR, customer service, and store operations, and IT administrators can apply security and access controls to ensure employee AI agents use is in line with security and compliance policies.

“We're looking forward to seeing you in the future,” said Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud. “Google Cloud offers a highly differentiated and comprehensive portfolio of infrastructure, open platforms, models, tools and agents.
