JP Messina is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Purdue University. This video discusses the potential dangers of artificial intelligence and how pausing AI development can create a false sense of security. Sam Altman, one of the creators of ChatGPT, recently testified before Congress, calling for legislation to regulate artificial intelligence. Other tech leaders, such as Elon Musk, have called for a moratorium on all AI development. Messina says AI, like all new technology, can be disruptive and harmful. Similar concerns were raised when technologies such as the printing press, telephone, and automobile were invented. AI is developing rapidly, but a pause in AI research could do more harm than good, Messina said. He said it would be difficult to stop companies and individuals from developing AI technology if they didn’t want to. A pause could create a situation where responsible researchers lose months of development time, while researchers who are less concerned about the risks continue to work. Messina says that if we can’t stop everyone from developing his AI, we should continue our efforts to keep up with this rapidly growing technology.
