The Most Reverend John Oyejora, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Osogbo, said artificial intelligence is an emerging field that will have a transformative impact on human relationships, but warned that its application risks displacing humans. .
Bishop Oyejora stated this at a Holy Mass and media parley held at the Cathedral of St. Benedict, Osogbo, as part of activities to mark the grand finale of the 2024 World Communication Week.
The cleric, who called for caution in the application of AI, emphasized that the extreme use of social media has placed significant restrictions on human interaction, even within the immediate family.
Bishop Oyejora said there is no doubt that AI will bring consistency, efficiency and faster decision-making to human communication, but AI will also spread incomplete information and false narratives into the public sphere. He argued that people should be careful because they could be used for illegal purposes.
He emphasized that AI should continue to be a communication tool, not a replacement for humans.
In his remarks, Abiodun Rufadeju, a guest speaker at the event, said that artificial intelligence will be useful in soft aspects such as research, development of new concepts, and simulation of concepts and possibilities.
The theme of this year's World Communication Week is “Artificial Intelligence and the Wisdom of the Heart: Towards Fully Human Communication.”
