Cedars-Sinai expands use of AI in clinical care and research

On the education front, Cedars-Sinai University of Health Sciences launched the country's first hospital-embedded PhD program in medical artificial intelligence, which was accredited this year.

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center reported significant growth in its artificial intelligence program during 2025, deploying dozens of initiatives across patient care, research, and operations under the guidance of a multidisciplinary AI council.

The hospital became the first health system to implement Aiva Nurse Assistant, a voice dictation mobile app that allows nurses to document patient information in real time and enter it directly into the electronic health record. The app was initially piloted in a 48-bed operating room and is now being expanded across the medical center to reduce administrative tasks.

Another pilot, Momentum Spine, introduced non-radiation monitoring for pediatric scoliosis patients at Cedars-Sinai Guerin Children's, digitally tracking brace compliance and curve progression to improve outcomes and reduce office visits. Expansion is planned for 2026.

The Cedars-Sinai Connect app, which provides 24/7 virtual care, added pediatric and Spanish language support this year. The study, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, found that initial AI-generated recommendations for common emergency care complaints outperformed final physician recommendations in some areas, but that physicians were better at gathering complete patient histories, according to a release from the hospital.

On the education front, Cedars-Sinai University of Health Sciences launched the country's first hospital-embedded doctoral program in medical artificial intelligence, which was accredited this year. The National AI Campus Program has grown to include Los Angeles Pierce College as a partner.

Research efforts have generated research into AI applications in mental health treatment, drug safety monitoring, implicit bias in psychiatric treatment recommendations, and the use of synthetic data for clinical innovation.

Administratively, the hospital appointed a new informatics leadership role, trained more than 1,000 staff in AI prompting technology, and had more than 6,000 users adopt its internal GPT platform.
