AI may help resolve the climate crisis, but it poses risks, says the UN chief

Meanwhile, the recent boom in AI-powered data centers has escalated concerns over rising energy consumption and water shortages.

“AI is not a ready-made solution, it takes risks. But it can be a game changer. So you need to dull the dangerous edges, sharpen the edges of the catalyst and make them work sharper,” Steill says.

He said, “It's done properly, and AI doesn't replace it, it unlocks human capabilities. Most importantly, the powers driving real-world outcomes: microgrid management, climate risk mapping, and guides resilient planning.”

In pursuing climate efforts, the world is working with the Paris Agreement to set caps on global warming, along with a shift towards a commitment to renewable energy options and carbon emissions reductions.
