The Translational AI for Networked Universal Healthcare (TANUH) Foundation has been established at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore as a dedicated AI Center of Excellence in Healthcare to drive AI-driven healthcare innovation at scale in the country.
It is being set up in line with the Government of India's vision of 'Enabling AI in India, Making AI Work in India', with the Ministry of Education setting up four Centers of Artificial Intelligence (AI-CoE), each hosted by a premier academic institution in India, including IISc.
IISc announced that TANUH AI-CoE is a Section 8 non-profit company focused on developing and deploying scalable AI solutions for the effective management of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) at the point of care.
The center operates as a multidisciplinary hub bringing together clinicians, data scientists, and AI researchers.
IISc's nine faculty members support the Center's research programs across digital health, machine learning, and public health. TANUH's core team is comprised of executives, engineers, program managers, and research staff with extensive industry experience, enabling health AI technologies to be applied from the lab to population scale.
TANUH's goal is to design and deploy tools for early detection, risk prediction, monitoring, and personalized solutions across high-burden diseases such as oral cancer, breast cancer, retinal disease, diabetes, and mental health.
These tools include human decision-making to support front-line health workers, improve primary and hospital care, and ensure care is safe and effective. These solutions are designed to be used directly where patients are treated, and are created and tested in accordance with Responsible AI standards and in collaboration with doctors and researchers from top national institutions such as AIIMS, New Delhi.
“We are excited to launch TANUH, an AI Center of Excellence in Healthcare. This multidisciplinary center will deliver scalable AI solutions for NCDs such as oral cancer and breast cancer, represented by the award-winning Aarogya Aarohan app. We aim to make healthcare accessible across the country,” said Prof. G. Rangarajan, IISc Director and Chair. Tanu Board of Directors.
TANUH has already launched Aarogya Aarohan, an application developed by the Oral Cancer Screening Team of the CoE, under the guidance of the Oral Cancer Control Committee, in collaboration with AIIMS, ARTPARK, Biocon Foundation, BITS Pilani (Goa), KLE Institute of Dental Sciences, Trivous and other clinical and industrial partners.
