AI cameras catch thousands of people who don't wear seat belts

Police say that people are not wearing seat belts due to fines while using their mobile phones, which has led to about 50% more people wearing seat belts.

Devon & Cornwall police said 10,000 images collected by artificial intelligence (AI) cameras in the past 12 months captured 6,000 people who used their phones to break the seatbelt law and destroy 4,000 drivers.

Added the majority of people killed in road accidents in Devon and Cornwall.

A spokesman for the Transportation Bureau said road safety is under scrutiny. “The measures have not been reviewed for over a decade and set the next step in the strategy for road safety.”

Adrian Lake, the Devon & Cornwall Police Department's road safety director, said the number of people, including children, was disappointed by the number of people who found the military traveling by car.

“It's true that your child is the most valuable cargo you can carry, which goes against the belief that people deal with their child's safety in such a casual way,” he said.

Government figures show that in the fall of 2023, 97.6% of all vehicle drivers and 95.2% of UK front seat passengers were observed using seat belts.

But Acusensus, a company that operates AI cameras that aim to use mobile phones to find people, said it's clear that more people are violating seat belt laws.

UK general manager Geoff Collins said he believes there is no more “generational knowledge transfer between people” about the danger of violating seat belt rules and needing stricter penalties.

“I think you addressed the problem and it disappeared, but it actually creeps in again.

“What we've learned is that some people don't wear seat belts habitually.”

According to the RAC, if you drive without wearing a seat belt, travel in a vehicle, or are not eligible for the exemption, you could be subject to a £100-pound on-site fine that doesn't carry a penalty point.

Drivers may be responsible for children up to the age of 14 and may be fined for each child's passenger without a seat belt. If the lawsuit goes to court, the fine could cost as much as £500.

However, road safety experts hope that future laws will allow seat belt crimes to be approved. This means that a breaching driver can take points and lose their license.

Automobile Association President Edmund King said stricter penalties are needed.

“We believe in them [the government] Consider making seat belt non-wearing an approved violation, perhaps three penalty points.

“I certainly think it's a step in the right direction.”

Since the mid-1960s, all vehicles had seat belts, but until 1983 it became a legal requirement for drivers and front seat passengers to wear them. Eight years later, the law was extended to include passengers in the back seat.

The law was accompanied by a TV ad campaign using the slogan “Clunk Click Every Trip.”
