AI app Petey uses ChatGPT to create Apple Music playlists

Petey, the mobile app that brought ChatGPT to Apple Watch users, recently brought its feature set to the iPhone. This gives users quick access to her AI assistant, and even allows them to trade Siri for Petey using Apple’s shortcuts. Now Petey has a new trick. The latest update released today connects the app to Apple Music so you can create playlists and add individual songs to your Apple Music library.

The new features come along with several other updates, including the ability to access the latest AI model, GPT-4, through a paid “Petey Premium” subscription.

In addition to being a clever tool, Petey’s new Apple Music feature demonstrates the extent to which Apple and other companies can leverage AI to provide recommendations within their own apps when needed. It’s unclear if that will happen with iOS 17, but reports say it will be a more minor software update this time around.

To get Petey’s music recommendations, simply enter a playlist request into the app’s interface. For example, requesting 90’s Grunge returns expected results such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, and Soundgarden.

The app then lays out short previews of each recommended song below the returned playlist, allowing you to scroll through each song.If you like the song, click the three dots next to the song[その他]Tap the menu to listen to the full version on Apple Music or save the track to your library.

In addition to saving individual songs to your Apple Music library, Petey also gives you the option to create playlists. By simply tapping the “Create Playlist” button, users can name the AI-generated playlist, open it in the Apple Music app, and start listening.

Of course, users must have an Apple Music subscription to use these features, as the service does not have a free tier. Users must have a Basic or Premium subscription to use Petey on iOS. Alternatively, you can use your own OpenAI API key.

In addition to Apple Music integration and GPT-4 support, other updates rolling out today include more payment options for Petey Basic subscriptions, alternative app icons, and the ability to carry from your Apple Watch even if you don’t have an Apple Watch. Petey is a free download from the App Store, but requires a subscription to use its features on iPhone. The app has a bit of a following, according to the developer, with a total of 24.7,000 installs since its Apple Watch-only release on March 8. The iPhone version will be released on April 6th.
