Artificial Intelligence or AI is a very hot topic at the moment and has been for some time. It used to be just a sci-fi term, but now it’s ubiquitous. Companies are using AI as a buzzword to promote everything from guitar amplifiers to search engines to cars to vacuum cleaners. Artists, writers, and many other human workers, on the other hand, are less than kind about it. I assure you, you can’t go to the farthest corners of the internet and hear or see anything about AI that hasn’t been said in some way.comedian Adam Conover recently talked at length about AI issues, and I think it’s worth checking out.
Whether you’re on the AI hype train or not, it’s important to recognize that there are good and bad uses for AI. It’s also important to recognize that the technology itself and how it’s used is a big problem. AI technology is often not used ethically. This is a big problem. AI is being used to hurt humans in many ways and produce inferior products, but we as consumers are told that technology improves our lives and experiences.
Conover has previously spoken on an episode of his podcast about AI and several issues including its name. actually! I highly recommend this. Most recently, he went to his YouTube to discuss it further. This video is his less than 20 minutes and highlights the many issues and implications that come with AI. He talks about how Google and Microsoft fired tech ethicists after they made them point out that AI has ethical issues. He explains how Tesla lied about using AI in the video. That’s just a small sample.
I don’t want to be a total Debbie Downer, and like Conover, I’ll admit that there are useful applications for AI, such as car crash detection and adaptable video game characters. I think AI, like most things, can be used to help people and help the world. Finding the best places in our world requires education and understanding, not just trying to use them everywhere.
