TikTok announced Thursday that it will begin automatically labeling AI-generated content from several platforms, including OpenAI's Dall-E and its own tools and generators.
Authentication is a major concern with the rapid development of AI, with authorities concerned about the spread of deepfakes that have the potential to disrupt society.
“AI-generated content is a great creative outlet, but transparency for viewers is critical,” said Adam Presser, head of trust and safety at TikTok.
Automatic labeling of AI-generated or edited content will be a first for social media platforms.
TikTok, owned by Chinese company ByteDance, announced it would begin testing labels that it “eventually plans to automatically apply to content it detects as being edited or created by AI.”
The company told the Financial Times that this includes content created using Adobe's Firefly tool, TikTok's own AI image generator, and OpenAI's Dall-E.
The company also said it will join an Adobe-led coalition of technology and media groups to embed industry-wide labels, also known as watermarking, on AI-generated products.
Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) technology sets technical standards to better flag and identify the origin of AI-generated content.
“By partnering with industry peers to label content across our platforms, we will make it easier for creators to responsibly explore AI-generated content, while also stopping harmful or misleading AI-generated content that is prohibited on TikTok. “We will continue to do so,” Presser said.
TikTok said automatic labeling will be gradual at first, but as more platforms mark AI-generated content according to C2PA standards, “we'll be able to label more content.” Ta.
OpenAI, the Microsoft-backed artificial intelligence company behind popular image generation tools Dall-E and ChatGPT, also joined the effort on Tuesday, aiming to detect whether a digital image was created by AI. announced the launch of a new tool.
TikTok's efforts to provide AI guarantees come as the company faces a legal ultimatum to sell from its Chinese owners or be banned from the United States.
